9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Hawaii Potters’ Guild Handbuilding Studio

Esther Shimazu, local girl and well-known creator of mischievous ceramic creatures, is back at HPG for a one day workshop! Join Esther as she shows you how to make an amabie, a mythical Japanese creature.

In Japanese folklore, the amabie has a bird’s beak, long hair, scales and three fins. In stories they are said to ward off illness. In this class, you’ll make two amabie: one about palm-sized and a little one that can be worn as a charm. Both can also be rattles. Cost of workship includes clay.

What to bring:

  • Favorite handbuilding tools

  • Rounded end sticks, ceramic doll eye sizer sticks especially the smaller ones

  • Something to make fish scales (e.g., fish scale clay tool, small loop tool, metal tubing, cocktail straw)

  • Hair texture tool (e.g., multi-needle tool, wire scratching tool, piece of hair comb)

  • A thin sharp knife like a scalpel or trimming knife

  • Bamboo skewers

  • Needle tool

  • Apron

  • Brownbag lunch and water bottle

  • Note: Esther suggests using a 1.18 mm/3/64” micro parachute cord to hang your amulet.

IMPORTANT: You must be fully vaccinated (two shots or one in the case of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine plus at least one booster) and have signed injury and covid waivers on file with HPG in order to participate. Mask wearing is required during the workshop.

Deadline to register: Thursday, 6/8/22 by noon. Class size is limited to 12 people. Esther is very popular so the workshop will likely fill up quickly.
